Living Room Furniture Trends Were Buzzing About in 2022

Like all trends – in fashion, food, and tastes of all kinds – living room trends change, too. The great thing about updating your living room to stay modern and exciting is that you can swap out things like individual pieces of living room furniture like sofas and couches, or even accent pieces like throw pillows, art, and rugs. Even a quick rearranging of furniture can really make a difference and make you love your space again. Simple update can breathe new life into your space without breaking the bank!

Trends are usually a reflection of the world outside our doors – what is going on in the wider world tends to influence how we relate to our home.

Given everything that has been going on over the last couple of years, where are we at today when it comes to living room furniture trends in 2022?

We are happy to report that it’s a great time for interior design. There is a blending of worlds, styles, textures, colours, and moods. This means that personal tastes reign and interesting combinations are encouraged. With that in mind, here are the living room furniture trends we currently love.

Outdoors Inside

Maybe because we all spent so much time inside and because we’ve realized the healing power of nature, organic motifs, plants, and clean woods like bamboo and light oak are all the rage for living room designs these days. For living room sofas, we are seeing interesting greens – sage green and grass green, for example – take off.

Large plants in white plant pots make for great accents, or trailing plants hanging from the ceiling beside rattan hanging lights – airy, breathable, and serene. People are craving peace and calm these days, and this is reflected in much living room furniture and designs.

Nod to the 70s

Mid century modern has had an incredible run, due to the elegant and simple designs that always stay classic. But we’re seeing a slow advance toward a revival of the following decades, with 70s influence starting to pop up in living room furniture. In small details like the legs on sofas and couches, as well as in the colours – mustards, deep browns, terra cotta.

There is lots of cool 70s art out there, if you want to start small. Or if you are in the market for a new living room sofa, you can search for one with retro accents and then start building out from there.

Sustainability

Not just because of supply chain issues, climate change, and rising inflation (though those factors surely influence people’s habits), sustainability is on the rise for furniture trends that are here to stay. What does sustainability look like with living room furniture? Upcycling, buying second hand, reupholstering and buying high quality pieces that are made from sustainable materials.

Many Canadian sofa manufacturers are ahead of the game in this area. We think that some of the best sofa manufacturers are Canadian because they use high quality, long lasting, and sustainable materials in their creations. This gives sofas and couches long lives – for decades – keeping them out of the landfills and the high quality of Canadian sofa manufacturers means that they hold up and don’t squeak and break down after just a couple of years.

Multi-Use Designs

Furniture that converts, rooms that have more than one use, smaller spaces and fewer things – these are ways that people are finding ways to do more with less. Multi use furniture and spaces are getting popular – things like ottomans that double as storage, rooms that are an office, a gym, and a hobby room, and living rooms that are simple and comfortable.

This trend reflects the fact that now so many people work from home, so the living room sofa gets more use, and a bedroom might also have to double as an office. In other words, people are making the most of what they have, and they are realizing that they simply need less.

If you are looking for a way to update your living room to keep pace with the latest trends, we would love to help you choose a new couch or sofa, and even help you design one from a Canadian sofa manufacturer that will be on trend and last for years.
